Sponsor a Duck
Sponsor a Duck
One of the very first things I did when I arrived to my new home was to get 7 ducklings. It was quite a downsize from the 40 birds I had before but I was excited knowing I wouldn’t have to clean dozens of eggs everyday, at least for the moment.
Sponsoring a duck can go towards one of two things.
It can purchase 6 ducklings and a bag of starter feed.
OR
It can cover the feed cost of one adult duck for an entire year.
I’ll choose which based on farm needs at the time of sponsorship.
The current breed of ducks:
Cayugas
The flock has a nice run outside with a swimming pool and room to play that’s protected from predators. I even built a small garden barrier around them which is watered from their pool when I drain it. It currently has a crop of garlic, sugar snap peas, radishes, chives and mixed lettuces.
Most ducklings are not sexed when they are sold unless you special order them direct from the hatchery, which requires minimum bird purchases in groups. (ducks are super social and need to have buddies) I wasn’t ready for that commitment upon my arrival. So I spent weeks tracking down the breed I wanted and snagged the lot down in Sanford.
I ended up with 4 drakes and 3 hens. Not ideal. I would like to add a few more girls before the end of the summer this year.
